The Douglas C-47 Skytrain or Dakota (RAF and RAAF designation) is a military transport aircraft developed from the civilian Douglas DC-3 airliner. It was used extensively by the Allies during World War II and remains in front-line service with various military operators.
This model represents a United States Air Force C-47A equipped with skis for operation in the far north that often required landing on fields of snow and ice. This C-47’s was used to supply and maintain distant weather stations operated under the Joint Arctic Weather Stations agreement between the United States and Canada. Now abandon, the Isachsen weather station was located in the remote arctic islands of Sverdrup which was said to have the worst weather in Canada.
